Fencing in Croydon — London Borough of Croydon

Croydon boundaries often run uphill, which is what makes fencing here more involved than it looks. A run of panels on sloping ground either steps or leaves gaps at the bottom, and the answer depends on the fence type and how much you care about the gap.
Panels step down the slope in fixed increments, leaving triangular gaps that gravel boards can partly close. Close-board follows the ground continuously and gives a cleaner result on a slope, at more cost.
Higher ground in the south of the borough catches more wind. On exposed runs we use concrete posts, deeper post fixing and consider slatted panels that let air through instead of acting as a sail.
Where a boundary also holds back a level change, a low retaining wall with the fence above it is far more durable than trying to make gravel boards do a retaining job.
Full detail on materials and build-up is on our fencing page, and more about the area on our Croydon page.
Close-board built on site, because the arris rails and boards can follow the fall of the ground continuously with no stepped gaps. If budget favours panels, concrete gravel boards can be cut and stepped to close most of the gap.
