Patios in Croydon — London Borough of Croydon

A large share of Croydon gardens slope, particularly south of the town centre towards Purley, Sanderstead and Coulsdon. Laying a patio on a slope is not a paving problem, it is a levels problem, and it is where most of the cost sits.
On a moderate fall we cut into the slope and retain the back edge with a low wall. On a steeper garden we build two levels with steps between them, which usually gives a more usable garden than one large flat platform.
Any retained edge needs drainage behind it and weep holes through it, or water builds up and pushes the wall out. We build that in as standard rather than as an extra.
Garden steps that vary in height are a genuine trip hazard. We set out riser heights so every step in a flight is the same, even where the ground is not.
Full detail on materials and build-up is on our patios page, and more about the area on our Croydon page.
Usually yes, but the extra is in the groundwork, not the slabs — excavation, spoil removal, retaining walls and steps. We itemise those separately in the quote so you can see exactly what the levels are costing and decide how much of the garden to terrace.
