Driveways in Croydon — London Borough of Croydon

Croydon driveways divide into two very different jobs. In the north of the borough — Thornton Heath, Addiscombe, South Croydon — frontages are narrow and level, and the crossover width dictates the design. Towards Purley, Sanderstead and Coulsdon the ground rises and driveways often need steps, retaining or regrading before any paving is laid.
On a rising frontage we either regrade to a workable gradient, or build a retained parking platform with steps to the door. Both need the retaining structure and the drainage designed first — the paving is the last decision, not the first.
On a driveway that falls towards the road, surface water has to be intercepted inside your boundary. We normally use a channel drain across the entrance into a soakaway, or a permeable build-up, so nothing discharges onto the pavement.
Parts of the borough sit on clay, which moves seasonally and holds water. That means a deeper dig and a properly compacted sub-base, not a token 100mm of scalpings.
Full detail on materials and build-up is on our driveways page, and more about the area on our Croydon page.
Usually, yes — it becomes a groundworks job as much as a paving job. We assess the fall from the road to the house, work out whether the gradient can be regraded or needs a retained platform and steps, and price the retaining and drainage separately so you can see what you are paying for.
