Fencing in Beckenham — London Borough of Bromley

Beckenham gardens are usually well established and enclosed on all sides, so a replacement fence has to be installed without wrecking the borders it runs along.
We cut back and protect planting where we can rather than clearing the border, and dig post holes by hand next to established roots.
On front gardens, permitted development normally caps a fence adjoining a vehicle highway at one metre. Picket or post-and-rail at that height keeps the frontage open and suits the period houses here.
Side gates take more abuse than any panel. We hang them on a properly set post with sized hinges and a drop bolt rather than relying on the fence post next to it.
Full detail on materials and build-up is on our fencing page, and more about the area on our Beckenham page.
Where the boundary adjoins a road used by vehicles, permitted development generally limits fences, walls and gates to one metre. Anything higher usually needs planning permission from Bromley Council, and conservation area rules can be tighter again.
